The Highlands and Islands Theatre Network (HITN) is a network of professional theatre, dance and performance makers who live and work in the highlands and Islands of Scotland.  HITN has a clear mission to develop collaborations and initiatives that enable member companies and freelance artists to improve their long-term organisational resilience and financial sustainability in order to be able to continue practice their artform in remote and rural parts of the Highlands and Islands to the benefit of local and international audiences

The organisation is a peer network where practitioners support each other, through information exchange and informal mentoring. Projects are developed in consultation with the companies and artists and often led by theatre makers as integral to their delivery. HITN and it’s member artists engage with a wide variety of partners ranging from Creative Scotland and Highlands and Islands Enterprise to local and national venue promoters and audiences, local businesses, schools, universities and local Health Services.

Over the next few years HITN aim to facilitate and unlock a greater entrepreneurial approach in the creative and cultural sector in the North of Scotland. Delivering strategic projects and collaborations that will tangibly increasing the markets for the network companies and freelance artists to deliver their work to International audiences.

  • Through national and International skills exchange, partnership building and collaborative working HITN aims to enable the cross border working of the network of theatre and dance companies and  freelance artists.

     
  • To explore and develop new working practices to improve environmental performance and meet the challenge of delivering touring theatre, dance and performance art in a low carbon economy.

     
  • To support and develop the creation of high quality contemporary performance projects originating from artists based in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland.


HITN has over 28 members at present 18 theatre and dance companies and 10 individual members, ranging from some long established companies, some emerging. Theatre makers deliver a range of activities such as new work (including writing and touring product), theatre in educational, Puppetry, dance, physical theatre, community plays, film/mixed media projects, formal educational courses, Actors masterclasses, large scale celebrations, site specific performances and youth and community workshop programmes.

Membership of the Network is open to professional theatre companies who are based and / or show their work in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland and individual performance artists based in the North of Scotland.
