JULY 2013

July has been a busy month for Highland Horse Logging!

We've just attended the Sutherland County Show with Tarzan making an appearance in the main ring leading the vintage tractor parade!

For two weeks at the start of the month we were extracting around 100 tonne of birch from Lochluicart estate policies for Scottish Woodlands.  We were working for the first time in conjunction with a mini-forwarder and it proved to be a interesting and successful combination.

We were also extracting timber from Rogie Falls for the Forestry Commision, with it being on a public walkway in the height of summer, Tarzan had lots of admirers and they enjoyed watching him at his work!

We have just finished bracken control at Torrachilty Forest and we are now in the middle of bracken bashing for the Forestry Commission at Inchindown Forest. The aim is to break up the large stands of bracken to allow violets - important food plants for the larvae of the rare pearl-bordered fritillary butterfly to flourish. For further information on the pearl-bordered Fritillary see the link below:

MARCH 2013

Highland Horse Logging has been busy in the New Year having just finished two contracts for the Forestry Commission. The first was at Lael Forest Gardens near Ullapool, this is a six hectare garden with over 200 varieties of common and unusual shrubs and specimen trees.  The second contract was at Rogie Falls near Contin, Inverness-shire.  Members of the public enjoyed watching traditional horse-logging making a comeback in the area and Brian and Tarzan enjoyed meeting everyone!

Arrival of Tarzan

Tarzan de Cleyriat, a five year old Comtois from France (via Jane Wordsworth) arrived with us early November.  He settled in with the rest of our horses straight away and has very quickly become firmly placed as a new member of the family!  He is a very laid back character but with plenty of drive - ideal for his new job logging!

Tarzan just off the lorry, head straight down to eat!!

Heir to the business starting young!!
