This is how I got started:
I was inspired to fund raise for the orangutans after I saw a badly injured female orangutan on the television evening news. The news item was filmed in Borneo and showed a hurt and distressed orangutan after she had been attacked by workers. What really got to me was the typically human way that she had raised her hands up to protect her face - it is an instinctive reaction that we would automatically do were we being threatened. Unfortunately, it had not done her any good and as a result of the attack she had been badly hacked. Luckily for her she had a visiting vet with her, but he was very concerned. As far as I know no follow on report came on the news, so I contacted ITN; they never replied.
But there is a happy ending to this as Michelle Desilets from the Borneo Orangutan Survival Trust (BOS) later told me that the orangutan had recovered. I was overjoyed.
At the time of the news item I was toying with the idea of arranging an art exhibition and because that orangutan got to me so much I decided to turn it into a fundraiser for them. I was really motivated. As a result Fearby enjoyed a brilliant Art Exhibition in May 2006. The artists and photographers who took part were terrifically supportive. We had a raffle, served refreshment and had a great weekend. The Exhibition raised £300 for the orangutans and my report on the event is published on their website.
The money went to help with wild orangutan rescue and they need just as much as we can raise for them.
