Peter was born in Cheshire, being educated at the Royal Masonic School and at the University of Birmingham where he took a degree in French and Italian (with distinction in spoken French) and at the Université de Strasbourg, where he won a diploma.
Peter spent most of his career as a translator in Europe working in Luxembourg where he brought up his family, enjoying life there until he returned to the United Kingdom on his retirement.
In the University of the Third Age in Cambridge, Peter has given over a hundred talks, the present series being on Italy and the Italians. Talks given so far include:

- Literary excursions
- France and the French series one
- France and the French series two
- France and the French series three
Peter gives travel talks, on request, to clubs and societies, particularly to raise funds for charities, subjects including;
- The Romance of the Silk Road
- Roaming around Rajastan
- Namaste Nepal
- Finding Aotearoa
