Habbo Scams

Habbo Scams

Scamming is a common problem on Habbo, but if you're careful, it won't happen to you and you won't have to go through the woes of losing your hard earn, or well paid for furniture!

If you follow a few steps and remember to use common knowledge you can easily avoid those STUPID (yes stupid) scammers. The reason we call them “stupid” is because sooner or later all their nasty furni and account stealing is going to catch up with them and they will be banned anyway!

A few simple rules to follow are:

1) If it seems too good to be true, it undoubtedly is!

2) Don't buy credits for furni unless you have been good friends with the person you are buying from for a long time (and by a long time I mean at least a year or longer!)

3) Don't give out your password. Just don't, no one needs it for anything, so just keep it for yourself, it's okay to be greedy sometimes :P. And, I would suggest not giving out your email, but I know you will anyway, so, if you do
give your email out remember not to accept any files over messenger. Especially files with the extensions: .exe, .bmp, .zip, .rar, or .jpg Also remember to scan EVERYTHING that comes on to your computer, as nasty scripters and “hackers” (which they aren't, they just like to call themselves that) seem always to find new ways of hiding nasty spy ware.

Examples of Scams

Furni for Credits scams

Trading furni for Credits might seem like an easy answer to your lack of Credits problem, but Habbo advise you not to trade Credits for rares for a very good reason.

A couple of hundred Credits for your throne? Just imagine what you could do with all those Credits! You could paint your walls, get HC or even get the next rare to hit the catalogue, BUT what happens when you hand over your throne and the Habbo you are trading with won't buy you the Credits? You have lost your throne, and there is no proof that you ever had it..

Even if you do get the Credits you traded for, you have no idea how they were purchased. The Habbo that bought them could have used a phone or credit card without their parents permission and instead of just losing the throne, you could end up with your account banned from the Habbo site for credits fraud.

Scam Sites

Scammers will make websites that offer you and other innocent Habbos special tools that you can download; programs that will supposedly generate free furni and rares, make you a Hobba, or allow you to flood, or script on Habbo.

There are no programs that can give you free creds, rares or furni, the program that you download with contain a keylogger and when you install this onto your computer it will record every keystroke you make and send that information to the person that made the website. The scammer can then log onto your account and steal your furni and Credits

Possible Programs That Might Be Offered:

- Dice Rigger

- Free Creds Generator

- Habbo X Making Tool

- Flooder

- Scripting Tools

- Throne Maker

Paying for jobs

Would you like a job that pays on Habbo? Lots of Habbos would, but think about this, how many jobs do you have to pay for in real life? The Habbo offering the job is just after your furni, there are jobs on Habbo that pay, but you should get paid to work, not the other way round paying to work.

If you encounter a Habbo that says "If you give me some furni and I'll give you a job that pays", send a call for help to alert an on-duty Hobba, then leave the room. If you are looking for a job try looking on the popular list for rooms that say **JOBS** but beware not all jobs pay when they say they do. Remember Habbo is fun and it is far better to spend your time doing what you want to do , rather than what someone else wants, when they might not even pay you for doing it!

Key Loggers

Keyloggers

How do people get keylogged?

For a key-logger to work it needs to be installed on your computer. The only way it can be installed is by downloading it and clicking on it to install and activate the program. Most key-loggers are disguised as other programs, in Habbos case usually free credits, dice riggers or free furniture programs (none of which you should be trying to download anyway). After clicking a key-logger file you usually get an error notice of some kind stating the file can not be opened or installed, this is a fake notice and the key-logger was installed successfully.

How can i prevent being keylogged?

Simple - don't download and open anything you are not sure of or shouldn't be downloading anyway: scripting programs, free furniture programs, free credit programs, email attachments.

To make sure you have none installed already the best thing to do is install a good anti-virus scanner and update it's virus definitions once a week (see useful links section). Be careful and DO NOT accept files from people you don't know on email or instant messengers.

All computers connected to the internet should have a firewall. Windows XP comes with its own windows firewall, but other companies such as McAfee also produce them. Firewalls are there so you can control what comes in or out of your computer.

(The type of key-loggers most commonly used for Habbo are currently undetectable by most scanners. The scanner that does detect this type is McAfee)

How do i know i've been keylogged?

The whole point of key-loggers is that you don’t know there are there until its too late.

There are some signs that point to you having a key-logger on your computer. These can be a slowing of the speed of your computer and load times and also if you are lucky and you have a firewall installed it may indicate to you that something is attempting to communicate with the internet and requires you to allow it. If this occurs and you don't know what the file is, don't allow it access.

What do i do if i think i've been keylogged?

First off, be aware that Habbo Hotel no longer give out safety banned to stolen accounts. Habbo Moderators can do nothing about stolen furniture or names.

Before following these instructions please make sure you
have sufficient knowledge and permission to edit and install information on your PC. If you are not you will need to contact someone who is able or take your PC to a local computer store to have the key-logger removed.

Habbo Nation do not take any responsibility if you damage your computer software or hardware during these instructions

Step 1

If you have a good virus scanner such as McAfee, you need to run it now with a full system scan. When key-loggers are active files are created that run in your Windows Task Managers Processes, while most of these are safe some are not.

If you know the name of the key-logger file, you can remove it from your 'startup', meaning that it will not launch when you restart your computer. You can do this by doing the following: Click Start > Go to "Run > Type 'msconfig' > Click the "Startup" (last) tab > Scroll down until you find the key-logger file > Uncheck the box > Click "Apply" > Click OK > Restart your computer.
Note: this does NOT delete the key-logger from your computer and it IS still a risk.

Here is a list of some known key-logger files:

explorer.exe/explorer.dll
mnsvcsp.exe/mnsvcsp.dll
ntvdcsm.exe/ntvdcsm.dll
secsrvc.exe/secsrvc.dll
sclkchk.exe/scklchk.dll
a sysfrcx.exe/srcfrcx.dll
fatrecov.exe/fatrecov.dll
tapiexex.exe/tapiexec.dll
win_spool2.exe/win_spool2.dll

If you do not have a virus scanner on your PC you can visit http://uk.mcafee.com/ and click the free online PC scam or buy their software. These scans usually detect key-loggers and allow you to remove any files they placed on your PC.

Another good online scan to check for viruses can be found at http://www.pcpitstop.com/antivirus/avload.asp

Step 2

This step is to make sure the dll files found are removed. Good programs for detecting these files are the trial of Anti-spy which can be found at www.downloads.com by searching 'Anti-spy' and also Ad-Aware which can also be found at the same site.

Step 3

This step is to make sure the actual key-logger has been removed. This program is called Spy Sweeper and a trial can be found at http://webroot.com. This will find any dangerous files and remove them from the quarantine the other software placed them in and then delete them.

Step 4

If you do not have a firewall on your PC you should download/buy one. Good internet security software can be McAfee Firewall and also Norton Internet Security. A free firewall can be found at http://smb.sygate.com/buy/download_buy.htm This will show you when a file is trying to access the internet and ask whether you want it to be allowed.

Important Note: No steps to remove key-loggers can be one hundred percent sure they were fully removed. The only way you can be 100% sure is by wiping your hard drive clean. Doing this will remove EVERYTHING off your PC and should only be done if all files are backed up or you are sure nothing on your PC is valuable enough it can be lost.

Have you ever gotten a virus? or found yourself scammed? and not know where to go?
Well HabboNation have got together some useful links for you to visit if you ever need that extra bit of help.

Firewalls

A firewall is a program which acts as a barrier between your computer and the Internet; It allows connections which are safe and blocks those which are not.
Some free firewall programs include:

Zonealarm Personal Firewall
Comodo Personal Firewall

Anti Spyware

Anti-spyware will help you rid your computer of files such as viruses and trojans, but not all of them will detect other malicious files such as keyloggers or diallers.
For this reason it's wise to run anti-spyware on top of your anti-virus and keep it regularly updated.
Some great free anti-spyware programs include:

Ad-Aware SE Personal
Spybot Search & Destroy
Windows Defender

Anti Virus

Everyone who has a computer should have anti-virus software, but it's not enough to simply install the software and forget about it. If you don't regularly update the virus signatures of your software it will be become less and less efficient and will start letting nasty files through to your computer.
Many people don't realise that no single anti-virus program can detect all trojans, viruses and keyloggers. That is why it's always a good idea to have one main program on your computer but to also do regular with a few on the many free online scanners.
Some of which can be found here:

Housecall free scan
Kaspersky free scan
Panda free scan

Safety tips

Never give out information like my name, address, telephone number, photograph, parents' work address/telephone number, or the name and location of my school without permission from your parents/guardians.

If you see anything that makes you feel uncomfortable always tell a parent or guardian.

It's best to never meet with people you have met online, but if you really want to meet someone make sure you NEVER meet anyone alone. A responsible adult (e.g. parent/guardian) should be with you and arrange to meet in a public area like town/shopping centre. Our advice is keep online friends online!

If you ever get an email/message that is explicit/inappropriate/makes you feel uncomfortable, do not reply! Always report the message to an adult or if on Habbo, use report.

If someone asks you to visit a site you are unsure about never visit it.

If you receive an email with an attachment and do not know who it is from, do not download it. Tell an adult or delete the message.

Remember that anything you say/do online can be recorded, edited and used against you in another place.

Be wary of people you meet online. Many people do not tell the truth about who they truly are. The 12 year old, female Habbo from the US may turn out to be 50 year old man from the UK.

There's always people who can help you. If on Habbo and see some very disturbing content, use the call for help. Otherwise take a look at the sites below. Make sure you tell a parent/guardian/teacher.

Safety Tips

It's always helpful to have an idea of how to be safe online, so here's a few tips on how you can!
A key-logger is a small program only a few kilobytes in size that you unwittingly install on your computers. Key-loggers were made to record all keystrokes that you make and then send them onto the person who made it via email.

The logging of all your keystrokes means everything you, or any other user of the computer, type while the key-logger is running will be logged. This includes usernames, passwords, credit card details and much more can be used against you, so the prevention or removal of the key-logger is extremely important!
