BHAA - IL&P 3K
15 August 2010

On Wednesday evening last, August 11th, AGS had 5 athletes compete in the latest round of the BHAA track series.  Irish Life and Permanent sponsored the 3000m races which took place on the track at the impressive Irishtown Stadium.  A couple of torrential showers threatened to dampen spirits just before the evenings proceedings were about to begin, but thankfully they petered out and the 5 races on the card progressed in intermittent sunshine.  Each race adhered to a handicapped format based on each athletes BHAA standard.  The races had staggered starts with 5 second gaps between standards.  AGS had a very successful night with 4 podium finishes.  In race number 3 Dermot Haugh finished second with John Griffin just behind him.  Performance of the night was undoubtedly that of John.  Having agonisingly finished fourth last time out, he gritted the teeth on the home straight and with panzer like determination crushed the medal hopes of Vinnie Murtagh from Hewlett Packard, pipping him on the line to grab bronze.  Mick Ferry continues to drink from the fountain of youth and made a winning return to competitive action running the fastest V60 time of the night in 11:59.  Great to see Mick back in AGS colours and showing a clean pair of heels to many a younger pup.  Jer Moloney also ventured out last Wednesday evening to take a break from his punishing marathon training.  Jer ran a steady race throughout and finished 7th in his standard.  In the final race, Owen Keane ran a convincing race to take second in 12:16.  Owen was always in command of second and his position was never under threat.
Actual 3k Times:  John G 11:22,  Dermot H 11:35,  Mick F 11:59, Owen K 12:16,  and Jer M 12:44.

Our BHAA regular Hugh Reddy decided that 3k was a bit short and he competed in the South O Hanlon AC 5k in Navan, on Tuesday the 10th.  Hugh has a real gra for 5k races and he completed the course in 26:12, a full 35 seconds faster than the previous weeks outing in Castlepollard.

The final BHAA meet in the track series is the 2 mile races at Tallaght AC on Wednesday evening August 25th.  Registration opens at 17:15 with the first race off at 19:30 sharp.
