On Wednesday July 28th last, Aviva sponsored a series of 1 mile races in Irishtown Stadium. A dedicated and industrious team of race organisers worked diligently to ensure that the 8 races on the card progressed smoothly. A hugh "bula bus" to all involved from Aviva and the BHAA. The weather was balmy and a soft breeze caressed those who undertook the classic distance. The night was a success for AGS and our regular BHAA stalwarts did us proud. On a night of many notable performances, Owen Keane stole the show with a classy example of brave running from the front. Owen got the bit between his teeth from the gun and quickly shot to the front of the leading pack in his race. Often seen as a precarious position to be in Owen lead the pack through the first lap. However he gently turned up the heat and began to stretch the pack into Indian file on the second. The final 800m were a procession as Owen continued to increase his lead and he had the luxury of coming down the home straight with over 20 seconds to spare on those in his wake. Owen breasted the line in 5:57. Earlier in the evening William Brosnahan ran 5:25, finishing 5th in his race. William has many other commitments and has confirmed that he hopes to knuckle down with the lads and is looking forward to the cross country season. John Burke ran a credible 7:16 with Hugh Reddy crossing the line in 7:45. While putting in a great effort John Griffin felt the pain of Eamon Coghlan as he was pipped on the line for the bronze, finishing fourth in his race in a sprightly 5:48. Well done to all the lads.
The next BHAA outing is the Irish Permanent 3km races on the track. They take place on Wednesday August 11th with the first race at 19:30. Registration opens at 18:15.
