The Carrick on Suir Triathlon took place on Saturday 17th July in gloroius sunshine in the south Tipperary town. On a day which proved to be very successful for the neighbouring 'Deise' men in the Munster Hurling Final, another 'Deise' Man, Dungarvan native Owen Keane was doing his bit very well for AGS in the 'Tryathlon' category.
Owen first got the bug in July 2009 after taking part in the Garda Triathlon Championships at the College. He has worked steadily on all three disciplines over the winter, especially the swim, which was his weakest. Fresh from recent races at Athy and Athlone where he fared well and having done a good BHAA 5k race at Irishtown Stadium on Wednesday night, Owen went to the Start Line in very good form. He had an excellent race covering the 500m swim, 20k bike and 5.8k run in 1.17.54 placing 7th overall and 3rd in his age category. There are plenty of good performances to come from this man in the future.
Taking part in the full triathlon race (750m swim, 20k bile & 5.8k run) with 300 others was John Burke, who seems to have been around forever. He boasts that he can remember doing triathlons back in the 80s when there was no wetsuits or trisuits! He has become very active again in recent years taking part in a variety of events and is now a proud age grouper (45-49). This was his first triathlon this year but despite being a bit rusty in the swim and at transition, he turned in a solid performance finishing the course in 1.24.03 and getting 5th place in his category.
Garda College based Joe Carton, an active member of the local Carrick Triathlon Club, was spotted at the race doing an excellent job policing the Transition Area.
