Although still and infant event, Triathlone has quickly evolved into Ireland's marquee triathlon event, and this year the midlands town, known as 'the Gateway to the West' had the honour of hosting a European Championship Race. Elite athletes and ordinary aul Joe Soaps rubbed shoulders as over 4000 hardy souls engaged in the multi-discipline sport.
AGS's triathlon legend Mick Macken produced a marvellous performance when carving out his best Olympic Distance result in many years. Despite approaching the magical big 50 ( I hear that 50 is the new 21), Mick was using this event as a barometer to measure his form and fitness as he tapers down for the Swiss Ironman in Zurich on July 25th next. Mick has upped the training a notch or two for this one and it paid off in Athlone. There he recorded 2:09:06 which placed him 11th, and first Irishman home in his age category, a sparkling performance considering this was a European Championship Event. This was a positive boost for Mick and he can look forward to Zurich with enthusiasm and confidence.
Mick was not the only one making waves in Athlone. Retired member, John Bruton another tri aficionado, also performed heroically with a great time of 2:13:20. This placed John 5th in his age category, just 1min' and 18sec' and 2 places outside the major medals. John is obviously not letting the grass grow under his feet and we look forward to his battle with Mick at the Garda Triathlon in September.
(PS : On the subject of triathlon, we wish Mick McGloin the best of luck as he continues his comeback from injury after recent surgery).
