On Saturday June 12th intrepid mountain runners from the four corners of Ireland and abroad travelled to the Mourne Mountains, Co Down for a festival of racing. The schedule included a 10k, half marathon, full marathon, and Ultra marathon of 85k. Two of our best warriors fought it out to be crowned "Garda King of the Mountains", a title both could genuinely claim when past results are closely examined. While most of us embark on serious soul searching and cerebral motivation techniques in deciding to tackle a standard marathon, the thoughts of running 85k across mountain trails, in June, would tip our mental scales towards the impossible indeed the insane. Mountains often throw up their own unique microclimate and the Mourne Mountain range challenged the lads both physically and mentally at every turn. Our two dogged mountain lions produced colossal performances on the day. Adrian Tucker completed the mammoth task in an bewildering 9 hours, 40 minutes and 40 seconds. Adrian finished 7th overall out of 52 finishers. Not too far behind Adrian was our other battling warhorse and Adventure Racing Supremo Kevin Grogan. His determination and stubborn focus resulted in a top 20 finish. Kevin placed 17th in 10 hours, 32 minutes and 20 seconds, a performance worthy of praise.
