Challenge Regatta 2022
With mountainous gusts and cavernous lulls, this was dinghy racing in the grand style. Gairloch’s “Beast from the East” seemed to blow in every direction simultaneously with consequent drama, competitiveness, puzzled faces and broken boats. Who could stay upright the longest? The only constant was that Morven won, although only by one point from Ori who was sailing Gairloch for the first time. She was followed home by no less than five boats from Lochcarron, promptly returning the Gairloch Challenge Shield to their overflowing trophy cabinet (another constant, I suppose). Ori also took home a memento for winning the “Round the Island” race – good sailing!
The boats that survived the weekend were all Lasers – those lucky enough to have 4.7 sails at the top of the order. The sight of the fleet playing dominoes as they returned to the “safe” haven of the harbour on Saturday was one to behold. Here’s to next year…
