Bury Lodge Park is situated in Bury Street West, Edmonton N9 adjacent to Salisbury House a Grade II listed building which dates back to the late 16th early 17th Century and is the oldest building in Edmonton apart from All saints Church.

Bury Lodge Park as it is known was part of the original grounds for Salisbury House and Edmonton Council took the opportunity to utilise the gardens as a park.

Bury Lodge Park is a formal park with areas laid out to rose beds, flower borders,a small pond ,wooden pergolas and a children’s play area. A few reminders of the past still remain, for example a chess board constructed of tiles.

Salisbury House was once a school and then became a private residence and was bought by Edmonton Council in 1936 and was established as the first Arts Centre in London to be provided by a local authority. In 1992 Salisbury House underwent major restoration work. Unfortunately it is not open to visitors.

FRIENDS GROUPS for Parks and Open Spaces in Enfield were first developed in 1995 by the council and now 2009 there are 21 groups.

WHY HAVE FRIENDS OF BURY LODGE PARK?

Over the years many parks and open spaces have succumbed to time and lack of investment and the uses of the parks have changed. No longer are children content with traditional play equipment, they now want more challenging things to do. The community want to be more involved with decisions which affect their local areas which is why Friends of Bury Lodge Park have taken up the gauntlet to work with the Community, Local Council and other bodies to try and return the park to its former glory, preserving its history, improve facilities and the environment for all ages to enjoy.

WHAT HAVE FRIENDS OF BURY LODGE PARK DONE?

From March 2009 in a very short space of time we have with the  Enfield Council Outreach Officer and Local Residents Association support formed a committee of local residents, held regular public and committee meetings, worked with council officers and outside organisations for future play equipment development, toilet provision and refurbishment in the park.

PROGRESS ON PROJECTS TO DATE

PUBLIC CONVENIENCES

As many residents are aware, there is a problem with anti social behaviour regarding the toilet block within the park, but hopefully not for much longer. The council are refurbishing the toilet block and installing baby changing facilities. There is to be a new facility provided for the lesser abled bodied person. Friends of Bury Lodge have had a large input into this design, whereby entrances have been moved and interior layout changed. Work is due to begin by December 2009 and hopefully the anti social problems will be no more in this area.
