Feis Fionn 2012

"Music - the soul of the world embodied in sound"

"Feis Fionn" is the Forres based traditional music session collective, which provides entertainment and sessions in venues all around Moray and beyond.

The "Fire in the Kitchen" session, plays on Sunday nights in the Old Mill Inn at Brodie, from 9pm

Music, Songs and Sessions by leading local traditional session musicians - Accordion, Irish Pipes, Fiddle, Banjo, Mandolin, Flute, Bodhran, Whistle, Guitar and Harmonica.

Some of the other groups, events, sessions, parties, ceilidhs, teach-ins, workshops that we organise are:

‘The Stoat, the Pine Marten, the Ferret and the Weasel’ – folk song group, with backing from ‘Fire in the Kitchen’ session musicians. Wth the fabulous voices of recording artiste Kevin Todd and Ed Bichan, and the musical tomfoolery of "the other 2...."

"SESSION SCHOOL" is usually organised for small festivals and teach-ins. Session School is NOT technical masterclass: it's about the pleasure of ensemble playing, communicating, the art of creating superb music in an unscripted environment. All instruments are welcome, and all standards - although participants ought to be "reasonably competent" (getting close to 'intermediate"..... -ish?) in their first instrument. If in doubt, make sure you come along, and you'll learn loads!

"Session School" sessions are often run progressively over a weekend, for example,:

"Bodhran and Percussion Workshop" Focuses primarily on bodhran in traditional music, but often introduces djembe, congas, bongos, other drums and hard percussion instruments. Usually culminates in final performances with  live musicians.

The much malaligned percussionist seems always to get the blame if the tune loses direction....... so it's vital to learn the art of driving the real heartbeat and life of traditional music!

'Slow Session' – for intermediate players Playing by ear and/or from music. Instruction and guidance in a session setting, led by leading instrumentalists.  It's handy to have the six sets of tunes from 'Planxty Irwin' through to the 'Tenpenny Bit' taken from the Radio 2 virtual session, for which recordings and music can be found on:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/r2music/folk/sessions/

or download the tunes manuscipts here

'Slow Session – Accompaniment and Intermediate Ensemble'; for all melody-line players and accompaniment musicians' A natural progression from Slow Session, although also a stand alone event on its own. Accompanists, eg guitarists, look at orchestration and chord structures, both basic and enhanced, in traditional music, and play along with the session’s lead instrumentalists.

The real 'Fire In The Kitchen' session band is available to play at parties – where the only guaranteed song is the first one!! From then, the session goes to where the party wants to go! Participation in all forms - dancing, singing, poetry, etc - are all welcome, and the atmosphere is distinctly 'house party' revelry in the finest tradition.
