The Photographic Archive
In the last decade, the Society has collected, copied and archived over 3000 island photographs spanning the period 1880 – 1960.
The photographs come from individual photographic collections both from island families and from people who visited the island. They also include copies of material held in national archives.
All these are now organised into a comprehensive Island Archive, which is being cross-referenced with genealogical data and background details, using census data and oral history recorded from the island's oldest inhabitants.
Whilst the archive is designed for use by the islanders, their families and the descendants of island emigrants, it is also intended to present a comprehensive catalogue of images of island life and built heritage to the visitor, illustrating the changes in the island over the first half of the 20th century.

You will find a small sample of our archive photographs in the two galleries on this website (People & Places). Some of our family collections are also available on the "visitsmallisles" website which also has a convenient search facility.
The society is now collecting a modern archive from 1960’s onwards, so please get in touch if you have photographs that may be of interest. A good example is the RGS collection from the early 1960's!

The society has also selected pictures from the Eigg Photographic Archive to give a flavour of what traditional life was like on Eigg before the changes that took place in the latter part of the 20th century.
Its 50-pages booklet, An Island and its People - Eigg, a photographic record, shows scenes of islanders at work and play, from crofters and fishermen to the lairds and their lodge.
The booklet is available at £6.50 +1.50 P&P. Get in touch through the guest book if you wish to purchase a copy.
