Welcome to

the Comunn Eachdraidh Eige website

dedicated to the research, preservation and interpretation of the isle of Eigg’s history.

In cooperation with the Isle of Eigg Heritage Trust, Eigg History Society has been involved in a variety of projects to make the island’s history accessible to all. Amongst these are the Eigg Photographic Archive, the Cleadale Crofting Museum, and the Kildonnan Archeology project.

Comunn Eachdraidh Eige was set up in 1999, and has now acquired charitable status. Membership is open to all, so please join to support our work.  (For details, please go to the membership page),

The Society also organises regular guided walks on the island, invites guest speakers on a variety of topics and publishes a yearly newsletter.

Projects we have been working on:

  • Commemorating WW1 on Eigg, with the children of Eigg Primary School. This year, marking 100 years since the end of World War 1, the Eigg children took part in an "Eigg Pages of the Sea" beach remembrance ceremony.
  • Cruise of the Betsey 2: a recreation of the journey undertaken by Hugh Miller,  famous Scottish geologist and champion of the people. it came to Eigg this September. Read about it on our Hugh Miller on Eigg page and hear Prof John Hudson's interview.
  • St Donnan Seminar: this very succesful seminar saw Dr Sally Foster and Prof Thomas Clancy present some thought provoking papers on St Donnan and the Early Christian period on Eigg: more details on our Kildonnan Project page
