Pudding Poke Buskers

The laser disc created in 1985 to celebrate 900 years since the Doomsday Book records the Puddin Poke Buskers as top leisure attraction in Weardale. At the time that could well have been so.

Their first cassette went to number one in the local record store charts and is still available on loan from Durham County Library.

Named after a street in Wolsingham, Weardale (Puddin Poke Lane), the Buskers travelled and played the length and breadth of the Durham Dales to great acclaim. They paused from active service in the mid 1990's and resumed again in 2004 for occasional performaces and a brace of newly recorded cds.

Their sound is a mix mash of tradional folk tunes, acoustic instrumnets, harmonies, twangy guitars and, these days, self written songs.

The orginal band comprised:

Ian Short - guitar vocals

Jim Pickering - concertina

Janette Briggs - vocals, percussion

Gordon Briggs - vocals, keyboards, guitar

Kevyn Smith - vocals, guitar, bouzoki, banjo (and laterly bass, keys and programming)

After Jim passed away and Ian left, the Buskers went to sleep for a few years. Then in 2004 the remaining three Buskers resumed service and continue to play write and record together.

Here's a sample of some of their old and new songs:

Early Puddin Poke Buskers

Archie's fancy

The Farmer's Toast

Later Buskers

Take Her In Your Arms

Shetland Lone Star

Oh Amelia

Peas, beans, oats and the barley
