New restoration grant from AIA

The Heritage Trust is pleased to announce that it has received a grant from the Association of Industrial Archaeology [AIA] to restore the Stevenson minor light on Colonsay.

The AIA is the national organisation for people who share an interest in Britain's industrial past. It brings together people who are researching, recording, preserving and presenting the great variety of this country's industrial heritage.

Every year the Association monitors over 200 hundred applications to alter or demolish industrial sites and buildings. They work to protect Britain's heritage and they represent Britain on the International Committee for the Conservation of the Industrial Heritage.

The Stevenson minor light was only one among many works undertaken by David A. Stevenson throughout his long career as Senior Engineer to the Stevenson Family business. Born in Edinburgh, 1854, David graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a B. Sc. in Engineering in 1877. In 1886, he assumed the post of Engineer to the Northern Lighthouse Board. He remained at his post until 1938. In this career he oversaw the construction of more than 23 lighthouses.

For more information on David A. Stevenson and the Stevenson family business in general, see here.

The Heritage Trust is delighted to be able to begin restoration of this wonderful piece of Colonsay's maritme history. We look forward to keeping you up-to-date with any developments as and when they happen!
