1233111 Henry Hastings 1864-1962

(Henry) Hastings Clay was born on 30 May 1864 in Chepstow, Monmouth, the eldest son of Henry Clay and Mary née Boden.  He was educated at Eton[1].  He matriculated Lent 1884 upon being admitted a pensioner in January 1884 to Jesus College, Cambridge.  He was a Captain in the Monmounthshire Militia.   He was living at Oak Grove, Chepstow (now a stud farm, and just across the road from Piercefield) at the time of his marriage at the age of 27 on 4 February 1891 in London to Mabel (Millicent) Williams, aged 25 (see below).

They had two sons and two daughters :-

Mabel Edith Mary                           was born on December 1890 in Woodlands St Arvan, was married on 4 February 1915 in St Arvan's to (Guy) Lancelot (Brereton) Francis, who was born in 1881 in St Tewdric, Chepstow, the son of George Carwardine Francis of Chepstow.  He was a Major in the 1st Monmouthshire Regiment. They had two sons, George and Richard.  He died on 18 September 1962 at the age of 81 at Eastcliffe, Tidenham, Chepstow.  She died on 17 June 1957 in Chepstow Hospital at the age of 66.

Henry Charles Hastings                 was born on 4 October 1895

Richard Leigh                                  was born on 31 January 1898

Phyllis Irene                                     was born on 1 August 1900 at Oak Grove, Chepstow, and died on her 82nd birthday at Bishop's Barnett, Chepstow

Hastings was a J.P., Deputy Lieutenant of Monmouth, and High Sheriff in 1895, and for further details, see his entry in  Appendix B - Kelly's Handbook for 1937.  There is a portrait of him in the National Portrait Gallery. 

He died on 7th July, 1943 at Oak Grove, Chepstow at the age of 79.

Mabel (Millicent) née Williams.

Mabel was born on 4 November 1866, the second daughter of Charles Henry Williams, at his home at Roath Ct Cardiff.  She died on 4 July 1943 at Piercefield Park, Chepstow at the age of 79.
