Norse pin and brooch return on loan

A Norse bronze ring pin from the 9th/10th century and a betrothal brooch dating from around the 18th century have returned to Canna on loan from the West Highland Museum in Fort William. The artefacts were gifted to the museum by the Thom family in 1938 following the sale of the island to Dr. John Lorne Campbell.

The Norse ring pin was found when workmen were excavating the foundations of the Rhu Church in 1911.

The betrothal brooch is made from the pleated human hair of partners in marriage and encased in gold shaped into a Celtic knot.

Both items will be displayed in Canna House until the end of October.

Thanks to Màiri Mooney and the trustees of the West Highand Museum for allowing the items to be brought back to Canna on loan.
