Viola Mary Joy's diary 1899

It is with great pleasure that we were able to re-produce the fine diary extract of a visit to Canna by a 20 year old woman Viola Mary Joy in 1899.

We owe a great debt of thanks to Miss Burchardt the daughter of Viola and copyright holder of the extract for allowing permission to use the archive.

The diary is exceptional not only to the History of Canna but the Highlands and Islands of Scotland It contains detail on the part played by the Canna men in the last Jacobite Rising of 1745, the ownership of Canna of the Thom family, the clearances, the wildlife of Canna at the time, the religious divides of the time and the social aspects of a Hebridean Island in the late 19th century.

We hope that you will enjoy reading what is a most fascinating archive.
