Greyfriars Covenanter Prison.
Greyfriars Kirk Edinburgh. Everyone has heard the tale of the Skye terrier Bobby and his vigil at his masters grave.
One of the more gruesome stories of Greyfriars is the covenanters Prison. In a far corner of the kirkyard after the battle of Bothwell Brig the Covenanter prisoners were herded into an open enclosure, lack of food, medical care and with clothing removed the prisoners were left for many months. Dying of wounds, exposure, torture of execution those who would not submit were herded onto a hulk of a ship to be sent to the new world as slaves.
Hitting a storm off Orkney at deerness the boat foundered, 200 odd drowned locked in the holds, some lucky and some not so lucky individuals escaped.
From time to time we hold a service in the earie prison and remember those who gave for our right to worship, this year the service was conducted by Revd H L Williamson. Prayers were given, Psalms were sung to honour our covenanting forefathers of the regiment.
