RFC players were out braving the icy weather again this week – this time for the annual Presidents Cup which was played at the Wheatsheaf Inn PC (possibly the worst place to play in a Baltic wind).
Barabara Vaughan, playing with Karen MacLeod & Bob Pugh faced club mate Tansy Mayfield (playing with her ladies team of Julie Bailey & Gemma Foster) in the first round. Barbara’s team played strongly and they went on to win 3 of their 4 games in the ‘snake’ leaving them in 2nd place going into the semi-finals. Tansy’s team were 5th with 2 wins, missing out on the semis by 2 points.
Pat Daviss played through her recent knee surgery and bad back pointing very well alongside her team mates Dan Murphy & Basil: despite some good play by all 3, they ended up 7th after the opening rounds with 1 win out of 4. Peter Beresford played with Derek Jones & Tony Smith, and won 2 out of their 4 games – ending up in 6th place after the morning. Finally, Kon Tomczyk played with Ian Bailey & Jesse Robic winning 3 out of their 4 games, placing them in 3rd place.
In the semi-finals, Barbara’s team took on Kon’s team and despite a tussle, Kon’s team won through to the final where they played Gay Murphy’s team. Kon, Ian and Jesse built up a very strong lead initially but Gay’s team rallied to start a comeback. However with the temperature creeping ever downward Kon’s team came good to win the 2013 President’s Cup. Well done Kon, Ian and Jesse!
