BiG Cup Semis & Final
22 September 2012

The A’s made it into the semi-final of the cup which was played against Abergavenny under quite bizarre conditions at the Clytha Arms.  Under rapidly darkening skies, Richard Harris & Tansy Mayfield lost their first game to Ian & Julie Bailey, whilst Paul Gregory & Jeremy Vaughan won out against the other pairing.  Under rapidly darkening skies, the second games started.  Several requests for the lights to be put on were met with the news that the lights were all out of order.  Abergavenny declined to delay or replay the game, so the match continued with Tansy & Richard suddenly hitting form in the pitch dark, glow in the dark trainers and a vegetarian diet seemingly being the answer to playing in the dark.  After the best part of an hour of playing in darkness, Andrew (landlord) came out to ask if we might want the lights on, and expressing surprise that we’d ever been told they were out of action!  With the lights restored Paul & Jeremy narrowly lost their second game, but Richard & Tansy’s victory was enough to see the A’s into the final.

The final was played under better conditions at Panteg house.  With Richard fannying about on the rugby pitch, it was left to Alison Gregory to pair up with Tansy, whilst Paul & Jeremy played together once again.  Sadly, it was not to be a happy ending – despite a couple of close games, the Wheatsheaf team had the edge and were more consistent seeing them to a 4-0 win, leaving the As runners up in the Cup.  Well done to the wheatsheaf, and to the Rising Sun who beat Red Lion in the Plate.
