Three players from the RFC took part in the WPA National Singles competition on Sunday 1st July. The field was the largest for some years with 16 players competing for the title. Tansy Mayfield had the best morning, winning all 3 of her group games to come 3rd in the seedings for the afternoon. Paul Mayfield won 2 of his games, placing him 5ht whilst Peter Beresford also won 2 with his points difference ranking him 6th. The afternoon was a knockout, and with all 3 RFC players in the Main it was looking good. Tansy drew Peter for the quarters and lost out to Peter’s consistent good pointing. He went on to play Tony Smith in the semi finals who, in turn, out pointed Peter. Paul meanwhile had beat Bill in the quarters, but lost his form against Stewart Spencer who won through the final. Many congratulations to Tony Smith for winning the title, and commiserations to Stewart who made it a very good final – a 13-12 nail-biter.
