From where do these books come ?

After coming down from Oxford, my father joined Her Majesty's Overseas Civil Service, and was posted to Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia) in 1930.

In 1933 he was promoted to run his own District, as its District Officer.  This meant that he WAS "The Government" over an area the size of Wales.  To get to his Station, he was paddled up the Zambesi from Livingstone for three weeks to Mongu, the Capital of Barotseland (now the Western Province), from where he walked the last 120 miles to Mankoya (now Kaoma) along bush paths, for there were no roads.  His "baggage" followed him, carried on the heads of seventy porters.

The only other Europeans in his District were at the Mission several miles away, and, like the Captain of a ship, he had to keep detached from the local population, so, apart from writing letters home (which I have), reading was his only entertainment in the evenings. Always an avid reader, he had already acquired 500 books, usually first editions, sent out by his parents.  His first action upon opening the parcel was to throw away the dust covers; however, some of the newer books do still have their dust covers.

My father retired back to England in 1964, and he survived to 102.  He kept buying books until he reached his centenary.

He died in 2009, and I now have a large number of his books here in Dorset, UK.   I also have quite a number of my own books that I no longer need.  But all these books take up space, I have nowhere to put them nor the time to read them, much though I would like to, so they have to go.

Condition

These books are mostly in "average" condition, some are worse than others, some better; the older ones are well-travelled, the newer are "as new".  Some may already have gone by the time yoou see this.  They are currently stored in about a hundred boxes rather than on shelves, and some boxes are in temporary storage elsewhere, so to get a specific book out to check it, is not quite so simple.

Prices

I HATE the idea of putting books in a skip, so offers are invited.  However, I do know that some of these works are actually quite rare and do have a value, so please be realistic !  Some are also advertised for sale on Amazon.  Some we would be pleased to give away, and might even deliver in North West Dorset.

Postage & packaging - £5 per book, orders can be combined.

Proceeds to charity.
