Enrico Stennett

Born in Jamaica in 1928, Enrico Stennett, alias 'Mr Magic Feet', came to England in 1947. He soon became active in the Communist Party which, curiously, inspired his life-long passion, ballroom dancing.

In 1952 he turned professional as one of Mecca's exhibition dancers, acutely aware of the colour bar which always prevented black people entering most dance halls.

This, in turn, led to his involvement in politics - first the Communist Party and later the Labour Party. Mr Magic Feet's political and social life illustrates a largely-forgotten period in the history of black people in England from the late 40s to the Notting Hill race riots in 1958.
