This week we have been the focus of hundreds of childrens attention. We took Honeycomb, honey and all our bee suits etc. to visit primary schools when they were doing minibeasts, bees in particular.
It was very heartning to see the pupils knowledge expand as their eyes, noses and taste buds got to grips with what the bees do to produce honey. Plenty of fingers in the comb for tasting and more than a few smelling propylis (bee gum - gathered from plants for sealing the hive and waterproofing). The wax was neaded and smelled, melted and stored for craft work later in the year.
All in all the pupils and staff had a genuine hands on experience of what bees do. This was coupled with explanation of the life history and structure of the bees and their colony, placed in a wider environmental and biodiversity context.
We also hosted an inspection by the Britain in Bloom judges at Newker Primary school this week. They will be back in July to see what we get up to and decide if the school are worthy of this prestigious award.
