Pupils and staff at Oakfield Infant school are all participating in the weaving and construction of a state of the art low carbon sustainable outdoor structure in the grounds. Reception and Year 1 children have been making willow hurdles that are to be part of a hybrid living structure. This outdoor classroom will be next to the ITC suite where the computers are being used for design, literacy and numeracy work associated with the structure.
Living Willow, wattle & daub, fabric roofing and woven features will all be used to bring ancient and modern building methods into PLAY.
Below are hurdles in the making, in the computer room!

The school hope to make the innovative structure the starting point for future work with Biological Services to involve everyone in biodiversity enhancement, growing their own food, composting, recycling, environmental citizenship and inculcating a genuine appreciation of the living world.
We will let you know how they get on.
