Bengal Engineering College, established in 1856, is the second oldest and one of the premier engineering institutions in India (Please see the history at the end). The college, previously under Calcutta University, has been given the status of an autonomous university since 1993. The university offers undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs in 9 engineering disciplines and 4 non-engineering disciplines. All academic and administrative departments are connected by a LAN with fiber-optic cables donated by the Alumni Association of USA/Canada.

The university is located in a sylvan surrounding in Howrah on the bank of the river Hooghly (the Ganges). It has a green campus covering an area of nearly 49 hectares and it is adjacent to the Botanical Garden of India. It is about 5 k.m. from the Howrah rail station and 10 k.m. from Calcutta. The new 'Vidyasagar Setu' on the Hooghly river has made it possible to go to the heart of Calcutta from the university in a few minutes.
