AHSFPS 2 Dundee College 0

Ahsfp's found themselves in somewhat unfamiliar territory last Saturday as they entertained Premier Division outfit Dundee College in the fourth round of the North of Tay Cup at Victoria Park. Having only reached the quarter finals of this regional tournament once before this was a good oppertunity for the present squad to make a piece of history of their own.

Manager Smith welcomed back sweeper Dale Riddell from suspension allowing Smith himself to move into midfield to take over from the unavailable Dall. Fp's also gave Ian Riddle his first taste of first team action this season replacing the unavailable Fenwick. More enforced changes ment that G.Smith and Kidd replaced the injured Mclaren and Ferrier in midfield. Mclaren managed a spot on the bench alongside the returning Macintosh and also teenager Liam Scott who was awaiting his first run out in the first team.

In blustery conditions both teams started this match in an aggressive manner to try and gain the advantage. It was Fp's though that were winning the individual battles in all positions which resulted in the visitors resorting to some dangerous tackles. D.Smith, Lawson and Sharp were the unfortunate players on the end of some of the College late challenges. Luckily though none of these incedents resulted in injury and in fact it was an accidental collision of heads that led to Fp's making an early substitution. Humphreys bravely put his head in at an Fp's corner but was left motionless on the ground for several minutes before coming round and was then swiftly taken to hospital.

Macintosh replaced him into midfield and put G.Smith into defence. Chances were few and far between with Matty Gall and D.Smith coming closest for the homesters. Although College struck the post it was their only meaningful attempt on Saundersons goal in the first half.

Taking heart from their gutsy first half performance and with the wind at their backs, Fp's began the second half in confident fashion. With only minutes played they got their just rewards. Some great individual skill from cultured midfielder Sharp resulted in him being brought down in the College penalty box. SHARP himself stepped up and fired the spot kick into the top right hand corner.

Straight from the restart Fp's went in search of another and some persistant play from Mike Gall earned his side a corner. D.Smith's corner was headed clear but only as far as KIDD who rifled an unstoppable volley into the roof of the net from the edge of the box to give Fp's a two goal cushion.

College responded immediately with a double substitution. As the College tackles continued to find players rather than the ball some of the Fp's players began to dish out a few of their own. In almost self defence circumstances Matty Gall, Sharp and Riddell all found themselves in the referees book.

Considering some of the punishment the Dundonians were inflicting the Fp's players general discipline was excellent. Fp's made their second change when Riddle suffered cramp in both legs. Lawson took up his position and youngster Liam Scott was thrown into the melting pot. His impact was almost immediate when Macintosh sent him down the right wing and Scott almost beat the keeper with a cheeky chipped effort.

With only minutes remaining College were awarded a penalty when G.Smith handled in the box. The College taker could only look on as Saunderson saved his blasted spot kick before jumping to his feet and saving the rebound from another forward to complete a day of misery for the College players.

In a match where every player excelled and the team spirit brimmed it was difficult for the management to pick a best player. D.Riddell, D.Smith and D.Lawson were among the contenders but the man of the match award went to substitute Jeem Macintosh for a superb display in an unfamiliar position to him in centre midfield.

To cap off a good day for the first team squad, John Humphreys only suffered mild concusion from his earlier head knock and was released from hospital in time to hear the final whistle.

Squad: Saunderson, Riddell, Humphreys, Riddle, G.Smith, D.Smith, Sharp, Kidd, Lawson, Gall(c), Gall, Macintosh, Scott & Mclaren.
