AHSFP's 3 SS Peter and Paul 4
01 September 2009

Fp's played SS Peter and Paul in their final group game of the Tay Valley Shield knowing that victory would ensure their place in the semi-final. A defeat or a draw would mean that other results in other groups would effect Fp's destiny in this competition.

Manager Smith was forced into several changes due to unavailability and decided also to change formation. Brown replaced Wilson at right back and Fenwick moved back to centre half to complete a back five. Sharp moved to the wing leaving Mikey Gall up front on his own as top scorer Matty Gall was on his travels. Gordon Smith returned to the bench.

Fp's started the match in a lack luster fashion. The Paulies were winning the individual battles all over the pitch and it wasn't long before their dominance paid off. A mistake by Mclaren on the edge of his box was pounced on by a Paulies forward who fired home from 18 yards.

Paulies second was another defence error, this time by D.Smith. As the rest of his defence moved out he played a striker onside and he ran through and slotted past Saunderson.

Another mistake led to Paulies 3rd. This time Saunderson was caught in no mans land and was easily lobbed.

Fp's best chance of the half fell to Mclaren but he screwed wide after good work by Mikey Gall. In a fairly physical first half D.Smith and Riddell found themselves in the referees book.

In an attempt to get back in match the management team changed the formation back to a more familiar 4-4-2. Riddell stepped into midfield, Mclaren out on the wing and Sharp up front. But any hopes of a come back were quickly thwarted. Sharp was easily beaten on the wing and a seemingly harmless high ball evaded Humphreys. The Paulies forward collected the ball and lobbed the once again out of position Saunderson.

Being 4 goals down Fp's could only look to improve their goal difference in the section and also restore some pride. Riddell was replaced by G.Smith who brought energy and drive to the team. Middway through the second half Fp's pulled one back, D.Smith picked out unlikely runner Humphreys who burst into the box and was brought down by the keeper. MCLAREN stepped up and made ammends for his earlier mistake by firing into the corner of the net.

Fp's then got within 2. D.Smith's flighted ball was controlled by Mclaren and he crossed low for SHARP to convert from close range.

Saunderson then made up for his mistakes with 2 outstanding saves from 2 rare counter attacks by the Paulies. Paulies were then reduced to 10 men as their winger was sent off for threatening behaviour towards the referee.

Fp's had many more chances to pull the deficit back as they piled on the pressure. But poor finishing from Sharp, Mclaren and most notibly Humphreys who volleyed wide from 6 yards, ensured it wouldn't be the Fp's day. However with the last kick of the ball they got it back to 1. D.Smiths pinpoint corner was headed home by G.SMITH but it was little to late for Fp's.

Fenwick and Kidd also recieved yellow cards for tackling offences.

The man of the match went to John Humphreys for a solid effort at centre back.

Team: Saunderson, Cowie, Brown, Riddell, Humphreys, Fenwick, Kidd, Sharp, D.Smith, Mclaren, Gall and G.Smith.
