AHSFP's 5 Claypotts 4
27 August 2009

Fp's played host to Claypotts in their 3rd match of the Tay Valley Shield knowing that victory was a must after dropping points in their previous game. Fenwick, back from suspension replaced the injured Ferrier and Mikey Gall replaced the unavailable Sharp up front for his first start in an FP's shirt. Saunderson, also back from suspension replaced stand in keeper Brown in goal.

This match started at a frantic pace with both teams trying to win the midfield battle. In the early exchanges it was 'Potts youthful midfield that was getting the better of Fp's experienced players. As a result it was the visitors who opened the scoring.

A seemingly harmless ball managed to get past the Fp's defence and as a 'Potts forward bore down on goal Humphreys found himself committed to the tackle and duely brought the striker down in the box. The ref had no option but to point to the spot and Humphreys counted himself very lucky only to recieve a yellow card for the offence as he was the last man.

As the Potts striker coverted it was Gall who gave the rallying call reminding his team that they came back in an earlier game from being a goal down. His team responded immediately with a well worked goal. Mclarens crossfield pass picked out Kidd who's inch perfect cross was met by GALL himself and he headed home from close range.

Fp's made it 2 shortly afterwards when the same 2 players combined. Kidd's accurate corner was again met by GALL's head and he bulleted home from 6 yards.

Fp's thought they'd made it 3 when Smiths freekick appeared to cross the line but the referee judged in favour of 'Potts. 'Potts themselves had a goal disallowed when their striker knocked the ball into the net with his hand.

The in form Riddell then joined Humphreys in the refs book after a miss timed tackle.

After words of encouragement at half time from coaches Harrison and Smith Senior Fp's came out in determined fashion. Mikey Gall collected on the half way line and played in cousin GALL who rifled past the visitors keeper for his hat-trick.

Only 5 minutes later Fp's increased their lead. GALL intercepted a pass and ran through on goal before sidefooting home for his and Fp's fourth.

Both Galls had good chances to put the game beyond reach but some poor finishing and unorthodox goalkeeping kept the score at 4-1.

Brown then replaced Wilson at right back. Fp's then went to sleep and lost two quick goals in succession from unmarked headers in the box. Immediately though Fp's regained a 2 goal advantage.

The ever hard working Cowie's quick throw was collected by Smith and his early left foot cross was turned into his own net by a 'Potts defender.

But once again Fp's hit self destruct. A 'Potts midfielders unchallenged shot was brilliantly saved by Saunderson but the rebound was prodded home by his unmarked striker.

Claypotts were now attacking Fp's from all angles and it was only a mixture of some stout defending and the woodwork on 2 occasions that kept their goal advantage. Fenwick also recieved a booking for a cinical tackle midway in his own half.

With only 5 minutes remaining Fp's replaced Mikey Gall with Mackenzie and although they were backs to the wall in the closing stages they managed to hold out for a much needed win to set up a group decider with SS Peter and Paul in their next match.

Man of the match went to Gall for not only his 4 goals but also work rate and determination. Also a mention for Riddell who again put in another fantastic performance at sweeper.

Team: Saunderson, Cowie, Wilson, Riddell, Humphreys, Kidd, Smith, Mclaren, Fenwick, Gall, Mikey Gall, Brown, Mackenzie and Richardson.
