 FIELD WALKS 2023

Field meetings start at 9.30am, meeting outside the car park of St Leonard's Community Hall unless otherwise stated. Don't forget to bring your camera to take that all-important shot for the Photographic Competition. Beginners especially welcome as others will help. Walks are free for members, there is a £2 fee for visitors. 

Please note that members are welcome to car share with each other, and for passengers we give a guide to a suitable cost contribution for the car owner.

                      

 NEXT FIELD WALK:  

Friday 17th May. Chris Preston & Kevin Marriott will lead a walk at Pleasley Pit Country Park. Post Code NG19 7PH.

The walk will be to look for Birds and butterflies, in particular the Small Blue which is Britain’s smallest butterfly.

Meet at St Leonard’s Community Centre for 8.50am, in order to leave @ 9am. Those requiring a lift are asked to contribute £2.50. The journey is expected to take 40 - 45 mins. Those wishing to travel independently are requested to meet outside the Visitor Centre for 10am.

Park in the free Car Park at Pleasley Pit Country Park or turn right at the top of the road and park on the left hand side 'up the hill'.

The walk is expected to take 2.5 to 3 hrs.

Stout footwear is recommended, along with binoculars if you have them.

Bring a drink & a snack if you like.

There is a Café and toilets situated at the visitor centre.

(The Mining Museum is open Wed. & Thur 10am - 1pm, Sun. 10am - 1.30pm)

Sun 23rd June - 2pm. ‘Coronation Meadow NR’/ Straw’s Bridge/ Manor Floods, Ilkeston. Meet at 2pm at the former golf course car park on West End Drive, approx. postcode: DE7 5GH (w3w.co/crew.thank.school). Nigel Downes will lead a walk to see how the rewilding of the former Pewit golf course is progressing, looking for insects, wildflowers etc. Followed by - weather permitting - a garden party at Nigel & Penny’s house in Ilkeston to celebrate their house, ‘Holyrood’ 46 Wharncliffe Road, Ilkeston being 120 years old!

Mon 15th July - A visit to the Botanic Garden, Leicester. 3, Glebe Road, Oadby LE2 2LD. Meet at the entrance at 10.30am. 16 acres of lovingly cultivated grounds and greenhouses, display a wide variety of features and environments. The formal planting centres around a restored Edwardian garden. Other planting includes an arboretum, an impressive herb garden, woodland and herbaceous borders, rock gardens, a water garden, special collections of Skimmia, Aubrieta, and hardy Fuchsia, and a series of glasshouses displaying temperate and tropical plants, alpines and succulents.

The plant collections and landscape features make this garden one of the most diverse in the region.

A lot of benches, so the plan is to take a picnic to eat in the grounds. Possibility of visiting the Attenborough Arboretum in the afternoon – Led by Nigel Downes
