North vs South
13 December 2008

This annual event in the University League callender is used as a selection event for the Scotland squad that will play shinty/hurley in January.  This year it was rescheduled due to snow and was moved to St Andrews.  Each university can select up to 4 players to play for their side.  North is UHI, Aberdeen, RFU and Dundee.  South is Glasgow, Edinburgh, Strathclyde and St Andrews.  UHI was represented by John MacRae, Keith MacRae(both Kinlochshiel), Callum Binnie (Newtonmore), James MacPherson (Lovat) and Claire Wightman.

Women's match - The north dominated most of the play with a powerful centre line and a steady defense.  They opened the scoring and had several good chances to extend their lead.  The south made several good breaks and at half time it was two - one to the south.  In the second half the game was more even but the north still had the best of the ball but again could not convert some of their opportunities.  Full time ended at 3-3.  The penalty shoot out went to sudden death after some stunning saves by both goalies with the south eventually coming out on top 2-1.  The north's full centre (Marianne from RGU) was named man of the match.

Men's match - On a small pitch, this was a very high quality game that went quickly end to end.  The standard of play was extremely high from all the players involved.  The north defense though was extremely tough and did not let the south get many chances at goal at all.  The north fired in some amazing shots though and came out comfortable 5-1 victors.  Keith McRae was named man of the match.
