Final lecture on the Stronsay Monster plus guided beach walk by Dr. Yvonne Beale nee Simpson

Final lecture on the Stronsay Monster delivered at the Orkney Nature Festival.  In the absence of DNA testing there is nothing new to add so this was a summary of the known details.

Stronsay Monster and other beach finds – talk & walk!
Dr Yvonne Beale spent many years researching the mysterious marine creature washed up 200
years ago at Rothiesholm. At her talk at the Stronsay Community Room, she will tell us about the
discovery, past thoughts, current thinking and the remains that could provide a tantalising ‘last
chance’ to solve the mystery. Then we’ll head out to search the shoreline ourselves! A monster
discovery is unlikely, but the Rothiesholm beach, close to the site where the creature came
ashore, is a great place to search for shells. Some of Orkney’s more unusual molluscs can be
found there – including one that is old enough to have been around when the unfortunate
monster was alive!

The events were well attended and although the Stronsay Canoe/Bubble shell eluded us we did find a few other shells which are locally common on this island but harder to find elsewhere.
