The Grand Walk North

'The Long Distance Milkmen Aim to Raise a Pot of Gold '

Trevor Hanover, 56 from Newcastle , and his guide Jim Duncan, 49 from Corbridge are embarking on ‘The World’s Longest Milk Round’ which began at 8.30am on 8th August 2008. They, with the help of Dairy Farmers of Britain aim to raise vital funds for Rainbow Trust Children’s Charity by asking hundreds of thousands of people for their support.

Trevor, who owns Hanover Dairies, and Jim, planned to walk 240 miles across the Highlands and Lowlands of Scotland, whilst carrying cool boxes on their backs containing milk for the entire duration of their seven day walk.

Reflection on the Grand Walk North/Longest Milk Run

The weather once again played a major part in the overall success of the walk.As in previous years the rain in the early days made the task significantly harder.Blisters are the  curse of the long distance walker unfortunately they are much more likely to occur if the underfoot conditions are wet, which they certainly were for long parts of the route.Regardless of the wonders of Gortex and all the other advances in waterproofing a good old Scottish summer will soon reduce technology to a sogging mass. For Trevor the blisters set in early and multiplied on a daily basis to the extent that walking became almost impossible.Fair play to the big chap for his determination and pain treshold a braver man you will find harder to beat.
As for the overall challenge it was its usual mix of highs and lows, the scenary remains as inspiring as always, with the bleakness of Glencoe on very wet dawn contrasting with the glorious sunshine of the final walk over the moors to Inverness.Physically it is as demanding as always with the same dreaded stretches of wilderness, and steep climbs.Emotionally it is a real test and probably the reason I'll keep doing it (maritial permission dependant).
It was difficult to keep the web site as updated this year as in previous years but hopefully the pictures gave an insight into what happened.
Finally a big thanks to everyone who kept in touch,to everyone who donated to the Rainbow Trust,to family and freinds for their support, to Stuart for his efforts both on and off the walk and to Lorraine for all her organisation and encouragement.

Cheers the noo.

Jimmy
