Redbridge 3 Barkingside 2
Match report by Adam Dennehey
In a game being played in memory of the late Jack Kelly, it was Redbridge who emerged victorious in a game in which both sets of management will probably feel relatively happy with. The game was played in good spirit and both teams played some good football.
Redbridge started the game brighter with Jon Higgs forcing a great save from Matt Cope in goal early on after a header from an Andy Edmunds cross went wide.
The first goal of the night came on 23 minutes, Ben Turner heading home from Andy Edmunds corner. A good header from the ex-Romford defender who should be looking to be a regular starter for the Motormen this season.
Side hit level five minutes later although there was a hint of controversy in the equaliser. Deep inside Barkingside’s half Edmunds and Side’s Scudde n clashed whilst trying to win possession. Both players went down injured but the ball was still in play. A great ball from Side’s skipper Jordan Tolan found Bradley Ross who shot across McCarthy in goal. It was a case of Side player’s playing to the whistle and some not even aware of the injuries.
The remainder of the half saw both teams have half-chances to take the lead. Ellie Kayumbe was unlucky to see a header go over at the far post for the Motormen, whilst Side’s Tolan dragged a shot from the edge of the area well wide of the post.
The second half started well for Redbridge as they won a penalty seven minutes into the half. Leon Diaczuk did well running into the box and his skill was too much for the Side defender who dragged him down. Ellie Kayumbe who scored Redbridge’s goal at Carshalton stepped up to take the penalty and sent Cope the wrong way to put the Motormen ahead.
Both sets of managers made changes later in the second half, bringing on players to have a look at before the season starts. One of those players brought on Fabio Jesus made a great impression and scored the third for the Motormen with 9minutes left. A good run from the youngster was rewarded with a good finish=2 0to put the game out of reach for Side.
The final goal of the night belonged to ‘Side as Jack Heffner ran forward and shot from around 20yards out beating McCarthy in goal.  In conclusion a good workout for both sides who look to be on schedule for the start of the new season.
