Sports & Remedial Massage

Sports and remedial massage incorporates deep tissue massage and specialist techniques to help correct physical problems and imbalances caused by strenuous and repetitive activity and trauma. It can help alleviate muscle soreness and pain, improve muscle health and flexibility and aid physical performance. Sports massage can also help to prevent the onset of injuries and assist the rehabilitation of injuries. The types of Sports massage are:

Maintenance massage - this is performed on a regular basis as required and can help to maintain muscle health and flexibility, high-light any areas that may be prone to injury, reduce muscle pain and soreness and promote the healing of existing injuries.

Pre-event massage - this is a stimulating massage that aims to warm the muscles and increase muscle flexibility, therefore reducing the risk of injury. Pre-event massage is also thought to have a positive psychological effect and is best performed in the hours before an event alongside the person’s normal warm-up routine.

Post-event massage - this type of massage relieves muscle pain and soreness and helps to maintain their flexibility and reduce cramping. The increase in circulation from the massage may also help with Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) that occurs 24 to 72 hours after sporting activity. (DOMS was originally thought to be caused by the build up of lactic acid in the muscle but is now thought to be caused by tiny tears in the muscle fibres). Post event massage is best performed in the hours or days following a sporting event or activity.
