A Brief History of:

Chad Valley Co. Ltd., England.1860-1978,which made lots of Sooty Toys & Games:

Chad Valley already had an established printing and bookbinding business when, at the turn of the century, it added games and toys. In 1915, the teddy bear joined its range. In 1938 Chad Valley was granted the Royal Warrant of Appointment Toymakers to Her Majesty the Queen. During World War II, Chad Valley factories focused mostly on government contracts, but were still able to produce a limited number of toys. In 1950 Chad Valley became a public company and expanded taking over smaller companies. A whole overhaul took place in the 1970’s, which caused all but two factories to close. In 1978 the company was taken over by Palitoy. In 1988, Woolworth acquired the name Chad Valley. When, early 2009, Woolworths went into administration a group called Home Retail bought the brand for, it is said, some £5 million.
