Distant Relatives I've recently been researching my family history as I acquired a number of old family photos from my late father. His mother (my grandmother) was Mary Shobrooke, sister of William and Ernest, 1883-1976, daughter of Wiiliam George Shobrooke and Elizabeth (Westlake) Shobrooke. I think we would have to go back to the late 1700s to find where our ancestors are directly connected but we can all be traced back to John Shobbrook (father of Humphrey) who died in 1569. I was amazed at how big the family was and how many times names have been repeated through the generations. Your grandfather, Thomas, gave me a particular headache as he had a cousin called Thomas and they were born a few months apart. I've made my family tree public on Ancestry.co.uk, calling it 'Toms/Shobrooke' but am still working on it. There are distant relatives in USA and Canada, as well as Australia, and I've just posted a photo to the Bassett family in Illinois (they're related on the Toms side) as it had no direct link to me but they have a website devoted to their family and ancestors; coincidentally, there are Shobrookes also living in Illinois! Posted by Jane Clayton on 24 April 2012 Dear Jane, Many thanks for your message. It's always good to hear from fellow Shobbrooks who are researching their branch. I will have a good look at the tree when I get back home to ascertain just where your line branches off. I have had communications from several Shobbrooks in the USA and Australia in the past and they seem to to have originated from the Oakhampton area, whereas mine were from the village of Ide and the Exeter area. It's all so fascinating! Regards, Gillian Posted by Gillian Sims McLennan on 25 April 2012 Lovely to read your information Hello, i am the 1st son of Thomas Michael Shobbrook who sadly died last year. I have 1 brother and 1 sister and we all live in Weston-Super-Mare. My father was resonsible for putting together the family tree with his father (Arthur on the clock tower plaque) which goes back to 1581. They both travelled around the grave yards and churches of many areas. I have now inherited the ropewalk in Newton Abbot which has it's own history i believe. Anyway i thought i would make contact. Thanks John Posted by John Shobbrook on 26 July 2011 Hi John, How lovely to hear from you! Fortunately I did manage to get back in touch with your father a few months before he died. We had not seen eachother since we were young children and it was so good to have an opportunity to have a long chat and catch up on the intervening (50!) years. I have always been fascinated by the original family tree that your grandparents created and after my father's death (at the age of nearly 94) I decided to continue with the history and descendents of all his cousins. It has been a real delight as I have managed to make contact with Bob in Australia and Jane in Kent and we recently had a wonderful get-together in June when Bob's sister Val and family came over from the USA. Jane, her brother Richard plus the American contingent all came here to Norfolk and we spent a great weekend together. It was particularly special as most of us had never met before, despite all being Shobbrooks! I am sure your grandparents would have been delighted to see such a gathering, as would my father. What fun, to have inherited the Ropewalk.....is it still in operation? I read about it once when I found reference to it quite by accident on the internet. It said that it was owned by the Shobbrook family but I wasn't sure which branch it was referring to. I have had some communication with your sister Jillian (my namesake!)in the past. When we spoke,Tom said she was to be the custodian of some of the old family history documents. One day when you have time perhaps you could ask if she has any very old photos at all which bear the names of the folk on them. My Aunt Hazel died leaving a very old album of photos, none of which are marked with names but which must go back to the Victorian era as the ladies are all in crinolines. I think they must have come from our great grandmother Emily as she lived with my grandparents at the very end of her life. I would love to be able to identify some of them and there is always the possibility that there are some other copies within the family. I am so pleased to hear from you. Do keep in touch. Kind Regards, Gill Sims McLennan (Shobbrook) Posted by Gillilan Sims McLennan on 26 July 2011 Emmanuel S. I'm a researcher/writer in South Australia, unrelated to the S. family. I've been trying to identify "Mrs S" in a 1870s photo that I have. In the process, I discovered your Emmanuel, who is referred to in 2 death entries as Emmanuel Frank and Frank Emmanuel. He died in Adelaide on 3 June 1896, aged 54, late of Newton Abbot, Devonshire. His residence was in North Adelaide. His widow, Frances Land S., died 5 October 1899, aged 61, of and at North Adelaide. They had 2 children: Florence; and Susie. I can't help you with their marriage and what happened to the daughters. Presumably they married in England. I can say, given that they arrived in SA in 1895, that the photo that I have cannot be Frances because it was taken in Adelaide much earlier than 1895. There was another S. family here, the father/husband being John, born about 1825, Devonshire, and thus related to Emmanuel? However, he seems not to have been a brother of your Thomas born 1818, perhaps a cousin? Posted by john bishop on 15 May 2011 Dear John, Thank you so much for making contact. I have long been trying to discover more about Emmanuel Shobbrook, but he stubbornly remains somewhat of an Enigma! My father Ralph who only died in 2008 at the age of 93 was the grandson of Emmanuel's brother Thomas. He always said that Emmanuel was regarded within the family as a black sheep, but nobody would ever say why.....so typical of the Edwardian generation! I found a record of him having boarded a vessel called the Orotava on Dec 15th 1895 at Plymouth, bound for Adelaide and the family tree states that he died there the following year. The travel record lists him as a labourer and does not record him as being married. Just 2 weeks ago an Australian contact found the record of his death in Adelaide which matches yours and I have subsequently ordered a copy of the death certificate which may just throw some light on his marital status. Can you tell me where you came by the info regarding his wife and children? I have not been able to find any record of any marriage in England or of birth certificates for any children with those names, so it could have just been a 'common law' marriage. Is it possible please to let me have a scanned copy of the photo in question. I have lots of very old photos of people I can't yet identify in my Shobbrook archives and there is always the possibility she is amongst them. I will keep you posted if I find out anything interesting on the death cert. Kind regards and again, many thanks. Gill Sims McLennan Posted by Gillian Sims McLennan on 17 May 2011 shobbrook family My father was Frank Shobbrook and I have a family tree traced back to 1581. Frank was descended from Thomas's brother Samuel. I must add I have done no research myself. Most of the work was done by a descendant of your Thomas and my branch was done by my late cousin Gordon. Posted by ann james on 27 April 2011 The site Hi, Just found the site, good luck will bookmark and keep checking back. If I can help, let me know Tony Posted by Tony Shobbrook on 12 November 2010 |
