This project started as an internet discussion forum in December 2006 for anyone interested in Scottish war memorials.

It quickly became a place to post images and transcriptions and within its first year over 80% of all of Scotland's civic war memorials had been photographed and recorded on the forum.

In late 2007 it was renamed as the Scottish War Memorial Project since it had evolved into something much more than just a forum and it is now being run as a project under the umbrella of the Scottish Military Research Group.

The work on this project is ongoing, and we are always looking for people to contribute. This contribution can take many forms - it could be additional photographs of a memorial, or some information about the unveiling, or even a photograph or personal story about one of the names on a memorial.

To date we have recorded over 3,400 Scottish war memorials:

  • 1,400 Civic memorials – the memorials on our high streets
  • 600 Church memorials
  • 575 memorials to individuals
  • 500 'other' memorials
  • 230 Regimental and unit memorials, including 83 from outside Scotland
  • 100 School memorials

Whatever information you might have, we would love to be able to include it in our project. Please help us to make this THE place for information on Scotland's memorials.
