Sought after vinyl
05 October 2009

A single, recorded almost 30 years ago and released by a Caithness band, Radio City, has been recently sold on E Bay for £300.00, whilst also selling for up to $530 in the US. In addition, one song featured on the single,” Love and a Picture”, has been involved in a worldwide distributed CD, “Every One’s a Classic”. The single was originally released through the bands own label, Media Wave, and only 1,000 copies were pressed, apart from around 30 mailed to radio stations and the music press, the vast majority of them were all sold within Caithness.
The band formed in 1978, with the original line up, of song writers James Sutherland vocals, and Raymond Henderson Bass / vocals, with Tich Bremner drums, Colin Matheson Lead Guitar and Robin Murray Guitar / vocals, recording a double A side single, featuring the songs, Love and a Picture and She’s a Radio at Highland recording studios Gollanfield, Inverness in June 1980.
Former band member Robin Murray explains, “I have over the past few years received e mails from people asking for information about the band, usually from Japan, and asking to buy copies of the single and indeed any other material the band recorded .  I actually became re interested in the progress of the Radio City single about 3 years ago, when I received an e mail from a guy who wished to talk to me about the band.
As my nose bothered me I e mailed my number and thought nothing more of it until I received a call. It turned out that the bloke had returned to the UK from the US where he had worked for Sub Pop, a big indie label, and that he wanted to launch a series of CD’s featuring what he called “Lost New Wave Nuggets” as he had recognized a demand for long lost, but known singles. He had managed to get his hands on a digital down load of the single and thought that it fitted into his project. Intrigued, I then did some internet research and found that the single was indeed a very sought after commodity amongst world wide collectors of British New Wave, “Power Pop” music, a so called late 70’s very early 80’s genre of music, although at the time we just called it music !
“After some more investigation I found that the single had featured on at least two bootlegged CD’s, UK81r and the Everyone’s  a Classic series, plus featuring high on collectors want lists. Who would have thought that a piece of vinyl recorded almost 30 years ago would be so sought after. ”
“An interesting update is that a Japanese band e mailed me recently to inform that they are going to record their versions of Love and Picture and Why, the latter, a Radio City song which was re recorded and released by the Blonde Brothers (1982), featuring Raymond Henderson, James Sutherland and Tich Bremner ex Radio City, along with Talked to You on the Phone, another song recorded by Radio City but never released..
Why / incidentally was made record of the week by national music paper “Sounds”, actually beating ABC’s The Look of Love to top spot. Nowadays I am more interested in the great feedback that the single, and indeed Radio City music is still getting from around the world, than on the price it now commands. It just shows how great a songwriting team Raymond and James were”
