A very personal word from President Robbie
I recently spent two months during September and October in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary after being attacked by sepsis and e.coli, which attacked my bones and bone marrow. When I came to my senses after several days of touch and go, I found out that I couldn't walk or barely even move. Thanks to incredible care from our NHS I am now at home and just about back on my feet.
I am currently President of the Rotary Club of Portlethen & District and along with other Clubs we are having a hard time under current circumstances to raise any money to support our usual local charities. I am therefore challenging my-self to get back on my feet by walking 31 miles during January with the support of my wife Judy and a good pair of walking sticks. All money raised will go directly into our Rotary Club Charity Account which will support local needy groups in going about their work in the community.
Please help me and make it worth while as we are able to make a difference to many people in need, especially at this time.

We are pleased to announce the winner, runner up and commended recipients of our first Rotary Annual Community Champion Award, independently judged by our District Governor Alistair Robb.
The winners are the Portlethen Covid Response team, started at the beginning of lockdown and co-ordinated by Sophie Stephen and a large group of caring local people, many of whom are still providing for local families.
Runner up is the Boogie in the Bar group, held in the Leathen Arms and originally for people suffering from dementia and their carers.
Also Commended are:
Brian Black, Scouter, for inspiring the young people in the area, recruiting new leaders and keeping awareness of Scouting in the public domain.
Allan Brooks, volunteer at the Newtonhill football changing pavilion and ground.
Young Harris Paterson, aged just 6, for making rainbows for his whole street to display in their windows at the beginning of lockdown. He delivered them with a note from his parents offering help to anyone who needed it.
Thank you to everyone who nominated a group or individual for our first year of this award, which was started with a small legacy form one of our Honorary members who gave Service above Self to the club for many years, Iain McLeod.
Everyone who helps in the community deserves recognition, but we don't know about them if you don't tell us!

Outward Bound with Rotary
Youth Team leader Anne McNair introduced RYLA student Adam Sweeney who shared his experiences of a week's outward bound training at Abernethy. Adam thoroughly enjoyed his experience and will be using it as part of his Duke Of Edinburgh Award.
He thanked Rotarians and friends present for selecting him and funding this valuable experience, District Governor Alistair McNair gave the vote of thanks or Adam's talk.

Charity Walk to Brig' O' Balgownie
Raising Funds for Portlethen Rotary
A large group of members took part in a very enjoyable sponsored walk along the River Don to the Brig'o' Balgownie.
Lord Hague and Robbie Middleton
Portlethen & District Rotarian Robbie Middleton has been honoured at the House of Lords where he was prsented with Rotary’s Champions of Change Award for his outstanding work in supporting orphans in Uganda.
Robbie was chosen to receive the award after more than 20 years of raising funds to support orphans in the Kabale and Bubaare area of South Uganda.
Recently he directed a project on behalf of The Budge Foundation and Rotary that oversaw the building of a girls’ dormitory, classrooms and toilets at the Amazing Love School.
Robbie joined ten other previously unsung Rotary heroes to receive his award at a ceremony hosted by Deputy Speaker of the House of Lords, Baroness Harris, who said, "The reputation of Rotary goes before you with your extraordinary work and we are very privileged to have you here today.”
Lord Hague congratulated each recipient in presenting the awards and said Rotarians should be extremely proud of their work.
Rotary International is a volunteer service organisation where members use their skills and their time to improve the lives of others.
Rotary is open to anyone aged over 18. All that is required is a positive attitude and a sense of adventure.

Rotary Primary Schools Quiz
Congratulations to Portlethen Primary B team who won a very close contest, only dropping 3 points in the whole competition.
They were closely followed by Portlethen A and Newtonhill A in 3rd.
Thank are due to Ms Watson for her assistance and to all the pupils, teachers and parents who came along to support.
It was also good to see younger pupils from the new Hillside school joining in as a class exercise.

We recently beat St Fitticks Rotary in a Gavel Competition that included Jenga.
Portlethen Rotary has received a very kind donation of £25,000. This money will be added to our Charity Fund and will be used to support local projects.

Portlethen and District Rotary Club organised the recent annual lunch of all the Rotary Clubs in the North East.
BBC personality and "weel kent" Robbie Shepherd kindly volunteered to be our speaker at the event and Robbie spoke of the help he had received from the local UCAN charity. £400 was raised at the lunch and Portlethen Rotary has since raised even more. The picture shows Graham Knight and Robbie Shepherd with a Cheque made out to UCAN for £700.
Rotary Meetings to be "More Fun"
President Moira recently commented on the image that Rotary presents to the public. Moira said, "We are often seen as folks from an older generation who do good works. While this image is partially true, we have younger members and we do try to do good in our local community and internationally but we also have a lot of fun. In fact it is my resolve in my Presidental year that we have even more fun.
