The Pied Piper visits

Neath Port Talbot

In December 2018, the press reported that Neath Port Talbot was the second most rat infected place in the country.   Bridgend was top of the list and Swansea was sixth.

Wales Online reported rats running around the streets in broad daylight and showed a film to illustrate the problem.

With austerity, Neath Port Talbot Council is proposing to triple its charge for call-outs for vermin infestation and this will affect areas around the mainline railway, rivers and will hit the poorest households.”

It was stated that the rats in Riverside, Port Talbot is in the heart of the town centre – an area which brings in millions in business rates but it is being neglected on many fronts.

“They are to be seen everyday especially after the pigeons are fed.”

Under draft budget proposals currently out to consultation, the fee for pest control could triple – the current £40 charge for three visits to homes to deal with rats would increase to £120.

Council officers have said the increase in fees is to cover costs and they would still be “much lower” than market rates.

Even the current charge cannot be afforded by many residents, so with this in mind the ‘Pied Piper’ looks at ways of dealing with vermin problems in several innovate ways.
