Hubert Wiggan Memorial Trophy

Hubert Wiggan, Past President of Northallerton & District Darts League, was a well respected Northallerton darts player, who played darts in several Northallerton pubs and clubs for over 60 years, in both the Northallerton & District Darts League and the Northallerton Clubs Darts League. 

In memory of his contribution to the local darts scene, his family have donated a Trophy, with the intention being to play a Team match between players from the Northallerton & District Darts League and the Northallerton Clubs Darts League. Following the success of the inaugural event in 2018, the Memorial Trophy was contested on Friday 29 November 2019 at Northallerton Cricket Club.

After a live draw conducted by Hubert's daughters Diane & Helen, play commenced a little after 8.00pm. The NDDL started well with wins from Jeremy Clarkson against Matty Fowler & Paul Newton against Andy Haw. Dave Atkinson pulled a leg back for the NCDL by beating Steve Robson, but the NDDL put themselves in control of the match winning three straight legs with wins from Dean Sewell against Bob Carter, Craig Monk against Neil Wallach & Alan Hall against Ian Atherton, to make the score 5-1 to NDDL at the halfway point. Ironically the same score at the halfway point in 2018. 

After a five minute beer break, the second half of the match brought wins for the NCDL, from Kyle Young against Duncan Ayre & George Webb against Eddie Manamley, making the score 5-3 to the NDDL. The fightback by the NCDL was on, however, the NDDL were well prepared, with Dave Greedy winning the 9th leg against Steve Blewitt to secure at least a share of the Trophy, which was quickly followed with a win from Chris Swales against Ted Clarke, to win the Trophy for the NDDL.

Although the match may have been over, personal pride was still at stake and the NDDL secured their eighth leg of the night with a win from NDDL stalwart Lenny Hall over Ian Whittaker and the NCDL secured their fourth leg of the night with a win from Chris Garsed over Joe Hutchinson.

The darts were followed by an excellent buffet supper, then a Raffle draw, which raised £150.00 which is to be donated to MacMillan Nurses. Finally, the Trophy was presented by Diane and Helen to Lenny Hall, a long standing friend of Hubert's and a darting legend in his right, who accepted the Trophy of behalf of the Northallerton & District Darts League. 

A great night was had by all who attended with once again darts and remembering a Northallerton darting legend being the winner. 

The Hubert Wiggan Memorial Trophy 2020 is already booked and will take place at Northallerton Cricket Club at 8.00pm on Friday 27th November. All darts players within both Leagues are invited, along with spouses, partners and friends.
