Northern Rhodesia Pocket BookGuide

Amongst the papers left by my father was this booklet, prepared in 1953 by the Northern Rhodesian Government to provide information about the country to prospective expatriate employees and settlers.

This is a "pocket" Guide, produced in conjunction with the much larger "The  Northern Rhodesia Handbook" that is available >here< - in the top left box there is a slider on its right that enables you to navigate through it..

Federal Party Manifesto

Inside this copy of the Guide was a leaflet issued by the Federal Party - Northern Rhodesia had recently combined with Southern Rhodesia and Nyasaland to form the Central African Federation, and this was the political manefesto of this particular party.  Included with this leaflet were two pages of Notes written by my mother.

Together, these form a little "time capsule" of what Northern Rhodesia was like then, eleven years before it became independent of Britain as the the country now known as Zambia.

Be aware !

If you click on the "CLICK FOR MAP" button at top right, you will be taken to a new page showing a map of the country, which you can then consult in conjunction with the text herein.  The population of Northern Rhodesia was about 3.5 million.  By 2015, the population of the country now known as Zambia had risen to 14 million.  Thus where the Guide indicates a certain population for a particular town, if you look at that place on the map, you will see it is now a very much larger place !

That's the "Map" button.  If you click on any of the other buttons at the bottom or right of the screen, it takes you to an advertising site.  Sorry about that - but you have been warned!
