Les Cameron

During the 40 years he was in the Arbroath / Dundee area he led the East Coast Jazz Men who had a large following around Tayside. In 1960 under Andy Lothian Jnr's leadership the band won the Scottish Jazz Championship.  In the early '60s the East Coast Jazzmen were resident band in the old Parker St Jazz Club, Dundee, backing virtually all the major bands in Britain such as Kenny Ball, Acker Bilk, Chris Barber, Bruce Turner Jump Band, Alex Welsh, Terry Lightfoot and others.

From 1964 to 1973 Les was the leader of the East Coast Jazzmen when they were resident band in the Invercarse Hotel, Dundee.

From 1979 to 1986 he was resident pianist in the Angus Hotel, Dundee.

In Arbroath around 1989 the band was partly instrumental in getting the highly successful Jazz at Hospitalfield Club off the ground.

For several years during the early days of Ken Ramage's Nairn International Jazz Festival, Les was the 'pre-concert' pianist.  During the same period he also acted as compere to the shows, having introduced artistes such as Ray Brown, Monty Alexander, Jeff Hamilton, Gene Harris, Bucky Pizzarelli, Ken Peplowski, Warren Vaché, Ralph Sutton and a host of others.

In the last three years Les has recorded Melodic Leanings (solo piano), followed by Les's Jazz (various jazz compilations) and now in 2006 has produced Scottish Melodies (The way I play them) in his favourite solo piano mode, available to download look at Listen and Buy on the left.

Before recording Scottish Melodies, Les said I had a hankering to produce something beautiful, and largely well known - from the land of my birth, Scotland.   From this source there have been countless bewitching melodies produced through the ages - not least from the Gaelic speaking areas.  I have included two such Gaelic melodies, but with, I hope, interesting treatment of their harmonies.

For good measure I have thrown in a few of my own tunes - I am Scottish after all.  The cover picture is of Lochmore, a place which both my parents and myself put well to the fore in Scottish beauty spots.  The tune Lochmore was basically written by my father, William M. Cameron, with a 'middle bit' written by myself.

I do hope that you'll enjoy this album of Scottish melodies 'the way I play them'."
