The Inverness community and the Baha’is in The Falkland Islands.

For nearly two years now the Baha’is of Inverness have been in contact with the Baha’is in the The Falkland Islands and visa versa. We have been exchanging newsletters every three months or so and learning about each other.

It came about originally because one of the Falkland Islanders was visiting Inverness as an in-patient for an operation at Raigmore Hospital. Our hospital treats patients from the Falklands who are in need of Orthopaedic operations. Imagine that length of journey, Stanley to Raigmore, for an orthopaedic operation!! During her time here, which included the recovery period, the local Baha’is visited her and took her out of the ward on trips and to our homes for events when she was well enough.  A few years later she was back for another similar operation and she became part of our little “family” for the six weeks. After that we decided to keep contact, learn more about the Falklands and particularly get to know their community.

We have enjoyed a couple of Skype events during this time. The first was very difficult due to high winds, this end, sending branches of a nearby tree across the phone line. We all had to de-bunk down the road to the home of other Baha’is and so a very breathless group, this end, managed to meet face to face for the first time with our patient Falkland friends! The second Skype was different, being audio only, when we shared prayers and then chatted, which was lovely.

We look forward to further contact.
