Naw-Rúz Greetings from the Catholic Church to Scottish Bahá'í Community
27 March 2007
Below is a letter that was received The Bahá'í Council For Scotland from the Catholic Church.
"For many years the Catholic Church has worked at an international level to promote good relations between people of different faiths. Recently the Catholic Bishops of Scotland have set up a Committee for Inter Religious Dialogue to express their own commitment to the work of establishing good relations between people of faith and to working with them for a just and harmonious Scotland. In the light of this commitment we would like to take the opportunity to send our greetings to the Baha'i community on the occasion of the festival of Naw-Ruz. You have prepared for this festival by a nineteen day fast at the same time as the Christian community has been observing lent. Although the Lenten fast is not identical to the Baha'i fast it does remind us of the sovereignty of God and encourages Christians to give more time to prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Similarly your fast has led you to acknowledge God's sovereignty and that human beings are totally dependent on God. It is only by recognising this reality that we can have the humility to put our own concerns last and work for the well being of others and the good of society. Naw Ruz is for you a new beginning as Easter is for Christians. May 2007 see both our communities renewed in spirit and willing to play our part in the work of inter religious dialogue and cooperation.
I wish you and the whole Baha'i community in Scotland a joyful feast of Naw-Ruz and every blessing in this coming year.
With all good wishes, Yours sincerely,
+ Mario Conti Archbishop Chair of the Committee for Inter Religious Dialogue"
