December Updates

by Wendy - 22:58 on 05 December 2008

Oh, how time flies, when we are busy! We are at last turning the corner . . .

Most windows, linings and sills, have been replaced, like for like, using the original glass into new lead work and frames. The outside rendering has been finished . . . just need to paint. Three doors have been replaced, two bricked up and a new one put in. Planning permission has been submitted, for a new, safer driveway, with a garage and a linking front door with entrance hall to the, yes, of course, the front of the house! (The old front door was in the back of the house.)

Inside, we have plastered one of the stairwells, once it has dried out and been painted a chandelier will drip from the ceiling!

Last weekend, the Music Room was plastered. We can use this as a lounge over Christmas. An original cast iron fireplace was built into the chimney, a pair of Edwardian, French doors have been hung, to open out into the garden…shame it’s snowy! The floor joists from the room above, were discovered not to be attached to the wall! So we decided to use some old oak (from a Church Lych gate) as a ‘cottage style’ beam, supported at the ends by more oak, which actually frames the Edwardian doors. Sounds weird? Check out the pictures! Now they are plastered in they look great and give character to the room. Another eBay purchase was some oak panelling, for the dining room, which had a huge arch and a pair of pillars thrown in. The arch is in and graces the entrance to the dining room.

The third bedroom, the Edwardian Bedroom, is to be plastered this weekend. This room has had the ceiling removed to become vaulted. Most of the furniture has been purchased for this room, apart from the bed! Thank goodness for eBay! Amazing how quick things happen when you invite the in-laws for Christmas!

Oh whoops! Very high winds lifted a sheet of corrugated tin roofing of the scaffolding and sailed straight through MY car windshield! Good job it wasn't my head!

WE have done well today - Sat 13th December - David is in bed with full blown Flu....unconscience, high temp, peaceful... anyway, the Edwardian bedroom has been plastered and the ceiling has gone up in the bathroom. We should be able to take a bath before Christmas! That will be nice, a long awaited soak in a very hot bubble bath, to soak my aching limbs!

Hi! Having spent 6 days with you over Christmas we are so proud of you. How you coped with 12 people on boxing day, plus Holly and Tommy, is a credit to you both. Keep up the good work - perhaps on our next visit we'll be in the Edwardian suite!

Hello you two! thought you'd like to know that when I was talking tonight to Ann Proctor,my cousin and Winifred's daughter (Christopher's sister) are you following? she mentioned a fireplace at Home Cottage which had the Latin words wriiten above it "sed non combustum". Its a ref to the story of Moses and the burning BUSH!ie the bush didn't burn!!I suppose that has disappeared but a good story nontheless. Any further with the Blue Plaque?Love Avril

Hi Avril, I believe that that was on a picture, that hung over the fireplace....I'll see if I can get it engraved onto an oak plaque! ..or an embroidery! Thanks for the memory! We have done so much and I haven't been upsdating - loads of great pics to go on! love W&D x

You folks have really been busy!!
It's been a real labour of love by the looks of things!
It's wonderful to see the house being saved from certain doom.
I knew you had the progress logged on the web but only stumbled across it today. Thanks for sharing the pics with the world, I've been curious how you've been getting on.
Happy to take care of any photographic needs you may have. Just let me know.
All the best
Matt
